The GCM-X’s main purpose is to detect overheating in hydrogen cooled generators. This section describes system operation.

When present in hydrogen, pyrolytic products are quickly detected by the sensitive ion chamber of the GCM-X. The GCM-X warns of impending generator failure faster and more reliably than temperature sensor.

The Generator Gas Dryer (GGD) is a self-contained drying system incorporating a pre-filter, dual chamber desiccant dryer, an after-filter and a positive displacement blower. The system is monitored and controlled by microprocessor-based electronics.

The GGD provides clean, dry hydrogen:

  • During highest contamination loading
  • During Idle time with less natural circulation boost
  • While automatically eliminating operator attention
  • By positively purging contaminants from the hydrogen system

Water, oil, and other contaminants cause corrosion in critical areas of electric power generators, resulting in diminished efficiency and increasing the likelihood of forced outages. Increased dew point levels also detract from generator efficiency by increasing windage losses.

E/One's Generator Gas Dryer (GGD II) is a dual-chamber system that continuously dries and recirculates generator cooling gas — even when the generator is on turning gear, which is a critical time to maintain low dew point.
